Olympiad

Directed by Leni Reifenstahl

Propagandist filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl was hired by the Nazis to ‘record’ the Berlin Olympic Games of 1936. Little could they know that their master athletes would be overshadowed by Black American Jesse Owens nor that the images of Hitler in the stands would be overpowered by beautifully shot and edited images of idealised heroic athletes’ bodies in action. This rare screening of this ‘documentary’ hymn to the body beautiful reminds us of the terrible fascination of fascism.
