New East Cinema/ Bridges of Time

Directed by Kristine Briede & Audrius Stonys

In the early 1960s, when the filmmakers behind the French New Wave were achieving a new realism, a generation of documentary makers in the Baltics set out to present a more poetic depiction of the world around them. This beautiful, poetic film explores the lesser known generation of documentary filmmakers of the Baltic New Wave, with moving extracts from features shot in 1960s Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Made by a Lithuanian director and a Latvian writer, this stunning meditative documentary essay creates a glorious tribute to filmmakers who have been neglected in cinema histories, a cinematic poem to cinematic poets. Released in the year that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania all celebrated their 100th birthday, Kristine Briede and Audrius Stonys’s work was a critical hit at the 2018 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
