In this complex representation of Argentina in the 30s and 50s and its relationship with imperialism, Julie Christie stars as a British governess hired by a wealthy Argentine family. She witnesses the upper class in decline, and a fascist movement gaining momentum. Bemberg offers a critique of the oligarchy (her own class), and of the fictions of religion and honour that are both perpetrated and suffered by the women of the family in particular.
