Eight years in the making, Milisuthando is a portrait of the filmmaker and South Africa growing up together in the aftermath of apartheid.
Driven by Bongela’s narrative voice and a compelling cast of family, friends, foes and some historical figures, the story braids together the three different worlds of their childhood – The now defunct Republic of Transkei, East London in the 1990s, and new South Africa.
A deeply intimate portrait of past, present and future South Africa, blending poetry, film, and photography into a striking cinematic essay, Milisuthando Bongela explores love, friendship, and belonging in a South Africa stratified by racism – proving that only if we understand its tentacles, can we begin to extricate ourselves from its clutches.
