Garin Nugroho’s striking drama explores the life of Juno, who is abandoned by his father as a child and joins a Lengger dance company. He is trained as a Lengger Lanang, a man who performs as a woman, and over time, his body comes to merge conventionally masculine and feminine characteristics. Spanning over four decades of Indonesian history, this boldly experimental biopic charts Juno’s growth into maturity as he travels the country and encounters a range of characters including a handsome boxer.

As an LGBTQ+ feature, Memories of My Body attracted controversy in Indonesia. Condemning the violence that shapes Juno’s experiences, the film incorporates music and dance to make a powerful, poetic statement on the political and artistic power of the body.
