Set in 1903 suburban, mid-western St. Louis this classic 1944 musical from director Vincente Minnelli (An American in Paris) follows the well-to-do Smith family as they prepare for celebrating the arrival of the spectacular 1904 World’s Fair. In one of her finest displays, Judy Garland – Minnelli’s future wife – falls for the boy next door at the dawn of the 20th century as change threatens her family’s cosy life. The head of the family is summoned to New York for a job promotion and the prospect of uprooting and moving threatens to change the family’s lives forever.
A sparkling musical with stellar performances from the ensemble cast this is a delightful and nostalgic film with lavish design and photography matched by a string of wonderful numbers including The Trolley Song, The Boy Next Door, and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Go on – indulge yourself!
