Manoro

Directed by Brillante Mendoza

UK Premiere

Set amongst the rural Aeta community during the build-up to the 2004 Philippines’ presidential election; 13 year old Jonalyn strives to teach the older members of her community to read and write so they are able to cast their votes. Shot in cinema verite style, Manoro is a striking example of how close Mendoza’s work comes to blurring the lines between fiction and documentary, and the political motivations that inspire his filmmaking. The UK premiere of Mendoza’s short film Ayos ka (PG), made especially for the 2010 Philippine elections, will screen before the feature.

With an introduction from Andy Willis, Reader in Film Studies at The University of Salford and Asia Triennial Manchester 11 film curator.
