The prototype of both the serial killer film and the police procedural drama, Fritz Lang’s first sound masterpiece tells the story of the hunt for a child murderer on the streets of Berlin, who is brilliantly played by Peter Lorre in one of his final performances. Caught between the last days of the Weimar Republic and the arrival of Nazi power, the director gives us a compelling and unvarnished portrait of the city’s dark side.

The screening on Wednesday 3 December will be followed by a post-screening discussion, led by Maggie Hoffgen.
