Director Lina Wertmüller continued her collaboration with actor Giancarlo Giannini in this tale of a man who sets out to assassinate Benito Mussolini in pre-war Italy. On route he ends up hiding out in a brothel where he begins to develop friendships with the women who works there. Typical of Wertmüller, the film uses an extravagant style to explore his emotions as the day of the assassination nears.

Giancarlo Giannini was awarded the best actor award at the Cannes film festival for his performance in Love and Anarchy.
