La Singla

Directed by Paloma Zapata

The extraordinary true story of a unique flamenco dancer, deaf since shortly after her birth, who disappeared at the peak of her career. Antoñita “La Singla”, the flamenco dancer from a desperately poor Romani family in Barcelona, took Spain and the rest of the world by storm in the 1960s. She went on tour with Ella Fitzgerald, even danced for Dalí and performed at the Olympia in Paris. Then suddenly she disappeared from view, and has since been unjustly forgotten.

Five decades later, Paloma Zapata reconstructs the life and tragedy of La Singla, a story that is as gripping as Searching for Sugar Man. The talented filmmaker interweaves past and present, combining archive footage with impassioned music and sound, and bringing the incredible facts to life with her signature blend of documentary and dramatisation
