Argentine hit LA SEÑAL was originally to be directed by Eduardo Mignona (EL VIENTO) who died during pre-production, leaving lead actor Darín to take up the reins as co-director (with NINE QUEENS friend Hodara). The result is a moody, traditional noir, set during the Peronista era, as Evita’s life ebbs. Corvalán (Darín) and Santana (Peretti) are mediocre private dicks, with the usual rubbish cases. Then a beautiful and mysterious femme fatale hires Corvalán for an apparently mundane job that proves to be anything but. Fifties Buenos Aires is beautifully realised through colour-drained design and cinematography – the perfect backdrop for excellent performances by the central duo.
