This visually stunning directorial début is set in the watery Parana Delta of Northern Argentina. There violent El Turu is captain of a water bus that links the isolated communities of traditional reed-cutters. One of the workers, Álvaro, is a quiet gay man whose love of books makes him as much an outsider as his sexuality. It also makes him the perfect target for El Turu’s hostility. The misty waterways and solitary lives are beautifully evoked through shimmering black & white widescreen photography.
