Kirikou and the Sorceress

Directed by Michel Ocelot

French hit KIRIKOU was inspired by a West African folktale, offering a 2-D animated vision of Africa a world apart from Disney’s singing lions. A baby in the womb demands that his mother give birth, and the miniscule Kirikou remains equally independent throughout. He sets out to free his suffering village from a beautiful, cruel sorceress and her evil spells. The film’s images are taken from traditional arts. Senegalese musician Youssou N’Dour provides a specially composed score, using only traditional instruments. A magical, empowering tale for young viewers and an equally bewitching treat for adults.
