Set in the ultra-Orthodox quarter of Jerusalem, KADOSH explores how the crushing restrictions and strict rituals of the tight-knit community affect the lives of two sisters. Rivka (Abecassis) has been married to Meir for ten years without producing a child, a crime against society. Meanwhile her younger sister has a secret attachment to a man who’s fled that life, and the pressures of family and community are brought to bear upon the siblings. The intense drama is reflected in the claustrophobic design and cinematography, and in the eloquent observation of everyday detail. Deeply moving and deeply disturbing, KADOSH forcefully renders issues at the heart of modern Israel.
