An honest and upstanding teacher of Chinese literature (Cheung) slowly realises he is falling for one of his students. Whilst this causes him some heart searching it slowly brings back to the surface the compromises of his own life that he thought had been left behind in the past. The film revolves around a series of heartfelt performances and Karena Lam won 4 international awards for her early role in the film. Also, sadly, this is the last screen role by Anita Mui, an extremely talented actress and singer who died of cancer in 2003, aged only 40.

Showing as part of the Visible Secret: The 21st Century Films of Ann Hui strand, showcasing the recent work of this inspirational woman filmmaker.

Reviews

“A delicately textured and emotionally subdued pic from veteran director Ann Hui that emerges as a superior soap. Though the elements that Hui uses here are all familiar from countless other films, there’s a serenity and quiet beauty about this small but impressive film, thanks in no small degree to the beautifully shaded performances of Jacky Cheung and Anita Mui.” David Stratton, Variety

“Affecting, well-developed drama from Ann Hui, and probably her finest film in years. Jacky Cheung’s first acting job in years is a good one, and newcomer Karena Lam shows real promise.” Ross Chen, LoveHKFilm.com
