The story of Queen Juana I of Castille and her all-encompassing love for her husband was also the subject of the earlier LOCURA DE AMOR, a histrionic, folkloric favourite of the Francoist cinema. In JUANA, Aranda, no stranger to stories of amour fou, coolly investigates the fine line between passion and madness whilst keeping an eye on treacherous politics. But the film belongs to López de Ayala, the young actress who has won the Best Actress Goya nomination for her portrayal of the tragic monarch.
