Written by the father of Iraq’s first lady, Jani Gal illustrates the unfortunate turn of events suffered by the main protagonist. Juamer is forced to leave his wife, who is suffering a difficult labour, to seek out the midwife; in doing so he becomes innocently caught up in a spiraling protest. The police insist he is the ringleader and after a series of harrowing interrogations he is sentenced to 10 years in prison. On his release he is desperate to seek out his wife and child of whom he has heard nothing in 10 years.
Jani Gal won the award for Best International Filmmaker at the Boston Film Festival, the Columbine award at Moondance, and was Iraq’s official entry for the Oscars-Annual Academy Awards 2008.
