Based on a famous French murder case that saw 20 elderly women murdered by a pair of noctural killers, J’ai pas sommeil is a haunting depiction of marginalisation and estrangement centred around three immigrants. Daiga is a Lithuanian searching for a theatre job, Theo is a musician and carpenter desperate to return home to Mauritius and his brother Camille is a gay transvestite who, along with his partner, happen to be the killers. The murders are not sensationalised but subtle and ordinary – evil in Denis’ world is part of our mundane lives – something that makes their violent behaviour all the more terrifying.
