In the Valley of the Wupper

Directed by Amos Gitai

The first segment in Gitai’s documentary Neo-Fascist Trilogy examines the circumstances surrounding a horrific 1992 racist murder in the western German city of Wuppertal. The film explores beyond the ensuing investigation and trial, interviewing a range of local people from neo-nazis to well established Turkish immigrants. Without overt reference to history, Gitai demonstrates how the present is saturated by the past. Unsettling in both content and form, the film spotlights a chilling crime as only one example of a terrifying growth industry in racial hatred.
