This richly subtle drama examines how a couple are affected by unexpected tragedy, how the seeming essence of thier beings can be magnified or overturned. In a quiet Maine fishing town, the Fowlers are the model bourgeois family. Then one day son Frank is suddenly dead, and Matt (Wilkinson) and Ruth (Spacek) are left as strangers in their marriage. The layered tones of the different character’s reactions lift this from Martha Stewart territory into a fine actor’s film, with the central performances from Spacek and Wilkinson deserving of Oscar notice.
