In Darkness

Directed by Agnieszka Holland

Nominated for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, Agnieszka Holland’s epic WWII drama In Darkness is based on an incredible and harrowing true story of survival during Nazi occupation.

In the Polish town of Lvov, Leopold Socha is a sewage worker and petty thief who reluctantly agrees to hide a group of Jews who are trying desperately to escape the liquidation of their ghetto.  His assistance comes at a price and Leopold begins to extort money from the vulnerable refugees for whom the dank and grimy city sewers provide a much needed sanctuary.   As time passes, Leopold’s own attitudes towards the Jews soften and despite risks to his own and his family’s safety, he begins to see how he can make a real difference to the people hiding out in the labyrinthine darkness.
