A look at the last woman to be hanged in the former Czechoslovakia in 1975, I, Olga Hepnarová finally gets a UK release after impressing in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival. Olga (rapidly emerging actor Olszanska) is a complex young woman desperate to break free from her unfeeling family and social conventions. With her Louise Brooks-like tomboyish looks she drags herself, chain-smoking, from one job to another until she appears to find her niche as a truck driver. Masterfully shot and brilliantly designed, this is a challenging but fully rewarding work.
