Happy, Texas

Directed by Mark Illsley

This indie début comedy was the subject of a feeding frenzy at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Set in the eponymous backwater town deep in the Lone Star State (yes, it really does exist), the film traces the ever more elaborate deception practiced by a pair of convicts. Seems that when Wayne and his buddy Harry escaped from prison, the Winnebago they stole belonged to a couple of beauty pageant producers – the hoped for heroes of pageant-mad Happy who’d hired them to prime their daughters to win. What initially looked like an easy way to lay low turns out to be anything but as this unlikely pair has to do, say, and be things they never dreamed.
