Handgun

Directed by Tony Garnett

Following a successful career in the UK during which he produced such landmarks as Cathy Come Home, Kes and Days of Hope, in the 1980s Tony Garnett tried his hand at filmmaking in the USA. The first result of this shift of location was Handgun which he produced, wrote and directed.

Shot in Dallas, the story centres on a young woman who is brutally raped at gunpoint following a night out. Following the attack, she plots her revenge. Far from the exploitation fare that usually represents such subject matter, Handgun is an uncompromising rape/revenge story that is also a tough critique of American gun laws and culture. Given its subject matter, Garnett’s film is sadly as relevant today as it was on its original release.
