A samurai is obliged by the warrior code to seek revenge for his father’s death. But three things make him reluctant to act: poor swordsmanship, pity for the murderer’s family, and affection for a young widow… Kore-eda’s first and, to date, only period film is a mellow and charming character study, but also a gentle but pointed critique of traditional notions of honour and duty.
