Billy Elliot’s Jamie Bell does some growing up in David Mackenzie’s twisted dark thriller Hallam Foe. Following the sudden death of his mum, young Hallam (Bell) takes to the trees to spy on all around him, including his beautiful step-mother whom he suspects may be responsible. Fleeing his family’s stately pile for the rooftops of Edinburgh, his voyeuristic obsessions take a dangerous (and comic) turn as he falls in love with a girl who happens to look just like his mother. Excellent performances, a cracking soundtrack and titles by Glasgow-based artist David Shrigley combine to create a gem of Scottish cinema.
