Lukas Dhont’s expressive first feature follows a young girl, assigned male at birth, as she struggles to realise her dreams of becoming a ballerina, all the while desperate for her body to reflect her true identity. Though conflict is ever present in Girl, Dhont’s mastery lies in his decision to focus on the internal, rather than the external. Inspired by a true story, the film, which was a prize-winner at the London Film Festival, draws impressively on an incredibly expressive performance from Polster.
Short film screening alongside this feature film: + Contoured Thoughts
Contoured Thoughts is a meditation on desire, recovery and the rituals of communion. A guide and conspirator alike, Ifekoya takes the viewer to another realm where time all but stands still. Regenerated by the blackness of water and land, the artist offers a moment to share the intimate, the erotic and the otherworldly.
This film is part of Depict, Watershed’s international short film online competition challenging filmmakers to create 90 second ultra-short masterpieces. The focus is on uncovering emerging international filmmaking talent, which shows originality, imagination and the ability to engage in just a minute and a half.
This screening will be followed by a post screening discussion led by Kate O’Donnell, Artistic Director at Trans Creative.
