The 1990s saw the influence of Douglas Sirk’s Hollywood melodramas become more obvious on Almodóvar’s women-centred dramas as his carefully constructed images became more layered.

Here, with the role of writer Leo, he provides a wonderfully detailed vehicle for one of his regular actors Marisa Paredes, who steps up to the challenge with a performance of some depth. Exploring with gusto the distinctions between popular and elite writing, The Flower of My Secret pokes fun at the artistic elite as Leo navigates the turbulence of her life and her writing.
