Curated by BFI NETWORK Talent Executive Ben Taylor, this selection of short films showcases the best live action, animation and documentary filmmaking from across the North. Picks include the award-winning Hanging On, archive based Lost Connections and the downright bizarre Divination Dave.
Films in this programme are:
Ruth & Safiya (dir. Louisa Rose Mackle) – Ruth, an isolated pensioner, meets Safiya, a teenage Syrian refugee who is haunted by the life she fled from.
Marcus (dir. Joshua Reeves) – A short sweet rom-com with a Black history twist set in London’s Marcus Garvey Park.
Lost Connections (dir. Yorkshire Film Archive) – A poetic response to the experience of the Coronavirus pandemic that draws on a century of archive footage.
Please Introduce Yourself (dir. Else Hunter-Weston) – An exploration og the difficulties facing a young person on the cusp of adulthood as she wrestles with her own identity.
Divination Dave (dir. Georgia Madden) – Savoury snack addict Dave must resort to extreme measures in order to satisfy his salty cravings.
Selling Out (dir. Lucy Scott Smith) – A short comedy about an actress’ realisation that perhaps her life isn’t going to turn out the way she’d imagined.
Hanging On (dir. Alfie Barker) – A creative documentary spotlighting the strength of community in a neighbourhood united when faced with eviction.
Punch-Drunk (dir. Liam White & Larry Ketang) – In a café in Marseille, a man’s life begins to unravel when his lunch is disturbed by a chatty stranger.
Attendees will have the opportunity to chat with the BFI NETWORK team about the support available through Film Hub North. It’s a great opportunity to meet the growing community of local filmmakers, and support exciting work from emerging UK talent.
