Family Film/ The King and the Mockingbird

Directed by Paul Grimault

King Charles rules the fantastical realm of Takicardie with an iron fist. He’s infatuated with a beautiful shepherdess and wants to force her to marry him, but she loves a chimneysweep.

After befriending a mockingbird who lives in the palace, the young couple decide to run away together. Their escape begins a wild chase through the futuristic palaces of Takicardie, with the King’s policemen, robots and mysterious creatures in pursuit.

Over 30 years in the making, The King and the Mockingbird is a surreal, silly and sublime reimagining of the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale of the same name. Light on dialogue but bursting with visual playfulness and invention, it has gone on to become an influential touchstone for the animations of Studio Ghibli and more.
