Catalan director Guerin revels in testing the boundaries of documentary, a practice renewed in the award-winning EN CONSTRUCCIÓN. This extraordinary portrait of a community in flux (Barcelona’s historic Chinese quarter) took over three years to make, as it tracked the construction of a block of flats in the traditional working class neighbourhood. Focusing on the stories of both inhabitants and construction workers, the film reveals how mutation of the urban landscape effects mutation of the human landscape. At the same time it celebrates the meticulous craftsmanship that underpins an increasingly mass-produced industry. Winner of the Best Documentary Goya. Print/copia: Planeta 2010/icaa
