Director Suárez moves into a different emotional terrain with this allegorical dramatic comedy. Forteza (Gómez) is a Real Madrid goalie whose career’s been cut short by the Civil War. Following the end of the conflict, he survives by travelling from village to village for paid penalty shoot-outs against the locals. In one spectacular Asturian locale, Forteza meets single mother Manuela (Verdú) and her son. But the ex-footballer soon comes to realise that the shoot-out organised between the villagers and the local Guardia Civil represents a greater struggle. Gómez has received a nomination for the Best Actor Goya for this role. El director Suárez se traslada a un terreno emocional diferente con esta comedia dramática alegórica. Al terminar el conflicto, sobrevive viajando de pueblo en pueblo donde reta a penaltis a los lugareños. En el entorno espectacular de Asturias Forteza conoce a una madre soltera, Manuela (Verdú), y a su hijo. Pero muy pronto el antiguo futbolista se dará cuenta de que el duelo a penaltis entre los del pueblo y la Guardia Civil representa un conflicto mucho mayor. Gómez ha recibido una nominación al Goya al Mejor Actor por este papel.
