El Fantástico mundo de Juan Orol

Directed by Sebastian del Amo

Mexican B-movie master Juan Orol (Sosa) was named the ‘Involuntary Surrealist’ because he made films that were so bad they were good; shoddy, improvised, vulgar… and box office hits! As his career advanced in parallel with the rise of William Jennings (Cudney), the magnate who monopolised the Mexican film industry, Orol became the King of the B-movie in Mexico’s Golden Age of national cinema.

Picking up multiple awards in its home country, this film pays homage to cinematic stereotypes via the larger-than-life director who best embodied them, while simultaneously depicting the evolution of film from grainy silent cinema through to glorious Technicolor.
