East-West

Directed by Régis Wargnier

The Oscar-winning director of INDOCHINE returns with a wrenching melodrama that melds historical tale with sumptuous imagery. Based on actual accounts, EAST-WEST is the story of the Russian émigrés who were enticed by Stalin into returning to post WWII Soviet Union. But when Dr. Golovine (Menchikov), his French wife Marie (Bonnaire) and their young son return, welcome is not forthcoming. Marie’s spirit is crushed under suspicion and bureaucracy as her husband adapts to the system. When a famous Parisian actress (Deneuve) arrives in Kiev she seeks her help, but Marie’s quest for freedom will be a long battle fought by many. Boasting the cream of French actresses, EAST-WEST was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar.
