Two firsts for Jim Allen make up this double bill. The Lump, his first contribution to the BBC’s Wednesday Play series, is an uncompromising exploration of exploitation and resistance within the building trade. The Big Flame was Allen’s first collaboration with director Ken Loach and remains a blistering dissection of a strike and occupation of the Liverpool docks.
