Based on the true story of the Alto Hospicio serial killer, who operated in Chile with total impunity from 1998-2001. Muñoz’s debut film focuses on the desperate families appealing to largely unresponsive and uncaring local authorities, as one girl after another disappears from a poor desert town. Daniel Candia (To Kill a Man, 2014) delivers an excellent performance as the devoted father of a missing girl, and veteran Chilean actor Catalina Saavedra (The Maid, 2009) stars as a rare member of the police to treat the grieving families with dignity. Taking a sensitive and empathetic approach to the subject matter, the film never sensationalises or exploits the victims and survivors, but instead offers a moving denunciation of femicide and the inequities of society.
