In the film that influenced fashion in ways many might want to forget, Madonna burst onto the big screen in her first major role as Susan, the free-spirited New Yorker who lights up the life of timid, repressed upper-middle-class New Jersey housewife Roberta (Rosanna Arquette). Susan posts personal ads which fuel Roberta’s romantic fantasies eventually leading to a collision of screwball coincidences, amnesia and the search for an iconic jacket which result in a fusion of mainstream comedy and downtown New York hipsterdom giving the pre-superstardom Material Girl the ideal cinematic showcase.
