This powerful feature debut from Venezuelan writer-director Lorenzo Vigas is set in Caracas’ chaotic lower class communities. Wealthy middle-aged Armando lures young men to his home with money; he doesn’t want to touch, only watch from a strict distance. When he meets Elder, the 17-year-old leader of a small band of thugs, an uneasy bond develops between two men worlds apart. With echoes of Hitchcock’s Rear Window in its fascination with furtive surveillance, this winner of the 2015 Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice International Film Festival displays masterful cinematography and acting, which is all the more impressive from a young non-professional actor who only received his script one day at a time.
