Dancer in the Dark

Directed by Lars von Trier

Following the well-publicised controversy at Cannes, here’s your chance to see the latest from Danish provocateur Von Trier. The heart-wrenching DANCER IN THE DARK is an audacious, risk-taking film in one of the most traditional genres – the musical. Selma (Björk) is a young, immigrant single mother who works with her best friend (Deneuve) at a factory in rural America. Their dull everyday lives are brightened by a love for musicals. But Selma is secretly going blind and dedicates herself to preventing the same fate for her young son. Then the act of a desperate neighbour forces the young mother to put her determination to the ultimate test. Von Trier ditches the austerity (but retains the digital shoot) of Dogme in favour of the stylised, multi-camera form suggested by the genre. Likewise, Björk’s songs and the film’s choreography break barriers and bring a new dimension. And the singer’s emotionally raw performance will leave no eye dry. There’s no doubt that DANCER IN THE DARK is guilty of some of the charges levied at it, but many classics of cinema could equally stand accused. See it and decide for yourself. Winner of Best Film (Palme D’Or) and Best Actress (Björk) at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.A season of Lars Von Trier films will show next month.
