A trio of beautiful girls led by the waspish Greta Gerwig set out to revolutionise life at a grungy American University. They welcome transfer student Lily into their group, which seeks to help severely depressed students with a programme of good hygiene and musical dance numbers. However, romantic entanglements with the opposite sex threatens the girls’ friendship and sanity. Described by Stillman on release as partly being concerned with idealism and the notion of emotional tailspin, the director’s fourth feature was a confident return after a lengthy hiatus. Gerwig, as is her custom, excels in the central role.
