Dallas Buyers Club is a gutsy story of an accidental activist set in 1985. Matthew McConaughey is mesmerising as Ron Woodroof, a Texan rodeo cowboy who indulges his passions for drink, drugs and women. When Ron is hospitalised following an accident at work, he is stunned when blood tests show that he is HIV positive. Dismissing the results as a mix-up Ron belligerently refuses to accept the doctors’ prognosis, but when faced with his failing health he can no longer ignore the facts. With limited access to HIV treatments in America he begins to search abroad for experimental treatments to combat the virus. Ron begins smuggling highly sought-after alternative medicines and is soon joined by Rayon (Jared Leto), an outgoing and charming transvestite, in forming Dallas Buyers Club, a means of dispensing unapproved medicines to fellow HIV and AIDS patients.
