Cult/ Johnny Guitar

Directed by Nicholas Ray

Nicholas Ray’s wayward western is one of the great cult films, renowned for its striking imagery and strong female characters – led by an unforgettable Joan Crawford as Vienna, and ably supported by Mercedes McCambridge as Emma.

As a head-strong woman of the west, Vienna has worked hard to build a successful gambling den in the wilds of frontier Arizona. But she has also attracted the wrath of the neighbouring townsfolk in the process.

Urged on by Emma, one of Vienna’s bitter rivals, a posse of locals try to close the saloon and run Vienna out of town. But she’s joined in the fight by Johnny Guitar: a mysterious, semi-retired gunslinger who has his own history with this defiant woman of the west.

Once seen never forgotten, Johnny Guitar only gets better over time.
