Cult/ Barb Wire

Directed by David Hogan

It’s 2017, the Second American Civil War rages on, and Steel Harbour is the last free city standing.

Barb Wire is the proprietor of the city’s most notorious nightclub, and moonlights as a bounty hunter and assassin to keep the dirty money flowing in. When a pair of resistance fighters seek Barb’s help in escaping the evil Congressional forces on their tail, she’s drawn back into a deadly conflict from her past.

With its adolescent eroticism, uncanny resemblance to Casablanca and a starring role for a pop culture icon, Barb Wire was an easy target for scorn on its initial release in 1996. Critics duly obliged. What was overlooked, though, was its giddy, cyberpunk thrills; a game supporting cast that features cult cinema royalty Udo Kier; and a brilliant bombshell performance from Pamela Anderson herself.

As Anderson reasserts her big screen credentials with the release of The Last Showgirl on Fri 28 Feb, now is the perfect time to revisit the earlier work of a one-of-a-kind star.

We have a special preview screening of The Last Showgirl on Mon 10 Feb, followed by a recorded Q&A with Pamela Anderson.
