Cotton Comes to Harlem

Directed by Ossie Davis

The directorial début of actor Davis (‘The Mayor’ in DO THE RIGHT THING), COTTONS… is adapted from the novel by Chester Himes and was one of the first blaxploitation films. When money raised by a Harlem congregation to fund a ‘Boat to Africa’ is stolen, local black cops Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson get the case. The trail of the money is tangled and the duo enthusiastically turn over half of Harlem in the search.
