CinemaAttic: Contemporary Shorts from Spain + Intro

Directed by Marc Martinez, Iván Morales, Julieta Lasarte, Marga Almirall & Alba Cro

A programme of five short films showcasing some of the best creative output from new Catalan filmmakers; delve into an ocean of memories on a voyage of discovery. A cinematic journey exploring themes of identity and family ties, wandering from Gothic sci-fi to ghostly layers of archive footage, and from late night karaoke to the bustling streets of Barcelona.

Films in this 86-minute programme are:

Somorrostro en tres actos (Dir Marga Almirall/ES 2023/16 mins/Catalan and Spanish with EngST)

A personal portrait of a Barcelona barrio across three different time periods, from its working-class origins in the 1960s, through the redevelopment of the 90s, to its current status as a beachfront tourist hotspot.

Sushi (Dir Iván Morales/ES 2023/23 mins/Catalan with EngST)

The story of Betu and Jaume, two men from different generations, who have yet to understand what parenthood means to them.

La Casa Oberta/The Open House (Dir Julieta Lasarte/ES 2023/19 mins/Catalan with EngST)

In ghostly layers of 16mm film, including archive footage and contemporary reconstructions, the filmmaker – the granddaughter of a Catalan film star – recalls her family history with poignant nostalgia.

Tigre místico/Mystic Tiger (Dir Marc Martinez/ES 2023/15 mins/Spanish with EngST)

A Gothic sci-fi tale with dark humour. After suffering a mysterious accident, a man acquires the ability to transgress time and space. But eventually his misplaced memories will catch up with him…

Anhel de llum/Longing for Light (Dir Alba Cro/ES 2023/11 mins/Catalan with EngST)

In a beautiful coming out story, the director explores Barcelona and its light; how it falls on the streets and the people around her: her chosen family. The sun as a brush that naturally highlights what can be seen and what remains in the darkness.
