Bigger than Life/ Les Demoiselles de Rochefort

Directed by Jacques Demy

Jacques Demy’s joyous, pastel-hued follow-up to The Umbrellas of Cherbourg sees him working on an MGM scale. Real life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac play twins (dance instructor Delphine and musician Solange) looking for love and excitement as their hometown of Rochefort gears up for a fair. Michel Legrand provides the jazzy score, whilst Demy coaxed Gene Kelly into lending some Hollywood glamour (and his own choreography) to a supporting role as a visiting American. This film will be screened from a 35mm print.

Musicals! HOME Staff Pick: Hazel Shaw, Usher (Front of House team)

Les demoiselles de Rochefort is joy. It’s as simple as that. This is the film I keep on standby, ready for any sad days that can only be saved with the brightest of musicals. Everything in this film is designed and choreographed — of course the dances are, but so are the movements and interactions of the characters and extras, with every detail accounted for. The result is a lightly spun confection, delicately made and finely balanced but rich with colour and emotion.”

Screening as part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO.
