Jonze puts the creativity and wild imagination honed on pop promos to brilliant use in this bizarre comic tale of a magical mystery tour into the head of actor John Malkovich. Surely one of the most imaginative and downright weirdest débuts of the decade, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH is energetic and eccentric cinema. A frustrated marionette artist turned filing clerk (Cusack) discovers the secret portal that leads into the mind of the distinguished actor. This proves highly attractive to the two women in Cusack’s life (Keener and Diaz) and to the hundreds of people who respond to an advert for the nightly excursion. Malkovich must be singled out for praise in allowing himself to be parodied in the most outrageous fashion whilst maintaining a shred of dignity.
