Beasts of the Southern Wild

Directed by Benh Zeitlin

This captivating American indie follows six-year-old Hushpuppy who lives with her irritable and sickly father, Wink, in the isolated Bayou community they call the ‘Bathtub’. Cut off from the wider world by a sprawling levee, Hushpuppy is a spirited and imaginative child who lives an independent and impoverished life with only loose ties to her often-absent father. When a giant storm reminiscent of Hurricane Katrina threatens to destroy their already precarious homes, and raise ancient creatures from their slumber, Hushpuppy, Wink and their ragtag group of eccentric friends fight to save their way of life.
