Battleship Potemkin

Directed by Sergei M. Eisenstein

A landmark in the history of cinema, Eisenstein’s silent epic was produced to commemorate the revolution of 1905, which paved the way for the later, world-changing one in 1917. When the crew of the Imperial Russian Navy are given rotten meat as rations, the men rebel and steer the ship to Odessa. Influencing innumerable later works, the film introduced the notion of montage as an art form in itself.
