Following a run of prize-winning shorts (many shown at previous ¡Viva! festivals), AZULOSCUROCASINEGRO is the feature directorial début of this madrileño filmmaker; it’s also chalked up a number of prizes at major festivals. Jorge (Gutiérrez) is a young man with a recently acquired degree and big plans that don’t include taking over his father’s janitorial position. But when dad falls ill, Jorge becomes trapped, despite every attempt to find a way out. And then his brother returns from prison, bringing new complications, and Jorge finds himself caught between his ‘soulmate’ and his brother’s incarcerated girlfriend. Meanwhile his pal Israel, aka Sean (as in Penn) has issues of his own… This nuanced dramedy is beautifully served by its excellent ensemble cast and sharp script (also by the director). Nominated for 6 Goyas, including Best Actress (Etura), Best New Actor (Gutiérrez), Best New Director and Original Screenplay.
